  • Complete portfolio of 6 silkscreen prints in the original wooden folder entitled Dooibroek - en duiven(hok) registraties. Year: 1981. No: 56 . Folder dimensions: H55 x w40cm. Signed, titled and numbered on the inside in black paint by the artist.

As a child, Jan de Bie received a carrier pigeon from his uncle Frans from Tilburg. It had to stay inside for seven weeks, but the impatient Jan let it fly out after just three weeks. The pigeon flew straight back to its old loft. Jan de Bie remained occupied with pigeons, and especially with their lofts, throughout his life. In his paintings, he built them from a collection of colored rectangles. He hung three-dimensional structures, 'pigeon lofts', full of drawings, linocuts and photos, like a peep box.
Dooibroek, the polder between Sint-Michielsgestel and Vught, is the vast landscape to which Jan de Bie kept returning.

Jan de Bie graduated in 1973 from the Royal Academy of Art and Design, Department of Painting, 's-Hertogenbosch, with paintings and drawings. He found his inspiration for this mainly in the landscape near his birthplace, the Dooibroek.
In 1974 he participated in the Brabant Biennale and again in 1978. His way of working was considered by the press at the time to be scribbling, but later this was thought differently.[source?] He developed further as a visual artist. The attention for the landscape never went away, but at the same time the area of interest expanded to pigeons and their habitation, Ulysses by James Joyce and libraries in general. De Bie makes drawings, paintings, woodcuts, constructions, books and etchings in which the above fascinations are depicted.
In Nijmegen, his first overview was published in 1989 in the Commanderie van Sint Jan. In 2004, a second one followed in the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo. On that occasion, Verf en Inkt, Doen en Laten (Paint and Ink, Doing and Letting) was published about the work and life of De Bie.
In 2006 the book Papers and Minutes of the Asgrauwe was published, a novel about pigeon racing by author H. van Boxtel, vividly depicted by Jan de Bie.
