He was born in The Hague and trained at the Hague Drawing Institute and the Academy of Visual Arts. He would teach here himself in the years 1929-1946. His stained glass windows and sculptures provide some color in the public space of The Hague during the interbellum. Giesen's work is characterised by a socialist slant; with his graphic work he tried to make art and beauty accessible to a larger audience and he strove for a better world in which people live in harmony with each other and with nature. His interest in workers' lives - central to the exhibition in Panorama Mesdag - should also be seen in this light.
