Jan Hendrix is opgeleid bij Ateliers 63 (Haarlem) en aan de Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht). Tusen 1971 en 1976 heeft hij reizen gemaakt door Frankrijk, Portugal, Noorwegen, IJsland en Mexico.Sinds 1978 woont en werkt hij als kunstenaar in Mexico, vanaf 1996 werkt hij aan het project Bitácora: een reizende tentoonstelling van grafisch werk, die voortdurend aangevuld en verder ontwikkeld wordt, en die getoond is in Peking, Djakarta, Sidney, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Ankara en Oaxaca.Jan Hendrix heeft met diverse schrijvers samengewerkt, waaronder Homero Aridjis, Seamus Heaney en Hans van de Waarsenburg. In 1999 heeft hij een decor voor het Cúirt International Festival of Literature gemaakt; dit jaar verzorgt hij het decor voor The Maastricht International Poetry Nights.
