Jan Korthals (1916 - 1972) was an Amsterdam painter who worked in the Impressionist style. Korthals's style is strongly influenced by his great examples, Breitner and Mackenzie. The latter was also Korthals's uncle and played a stimulating role in his life. Korthals's work covers many cityscapes, especially Amsterdam and Paris. He also worked a lot on commission to illustrate calendars and other printed matter. Jan Korthals was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Later he was taught by his uncle Marie Henry Mackenzie. Jan Korthals was best known for his touching portraits and his atmospheric cityscapes and landscapes. He regularly received commissions for cityscapes that were processed in calendars. This made him widely popular. His Amsterdam cityscapes, in which the brown tone predominates, remind us most of Breitner. The influence of his uncle and teacher Marie Henry Mackenzie is unmistakably recognizable here, who herself was an apprentice with Breitner for a long period of time. Jan Korthals also liked to visit Paris, where he made many ink drawings, which he later turned into oil paintings in his studio in Amsterdam.
