Montyn was born in 1924 into a strict reformed family. His father was a house painter, deacon and voted SGP.
During World War II, Montyn joined the National Socialist National Youth Storm. With it, he went to training camp in Austria. After this, he signed up for the Kriegsmarine, where he experienced a shipwreck that he barely survived. After this disaster, he was sent to the Eastern Front to serve in the trench warfare in Courland.
After the Liberation he reported to the Foreign Legion. He was trained in Algeria as a paratrooper to be deployed against Japan. After a short time he decided to escape. Back in the Netherlands he was no longer accepted as a collaborator in his former environment and in 1950 he became a volunteer with a Dutch army group in the Korean War.
Back in the Netherlands, his past in German military service was considered to be compensated, but he still suffered a psychological crisis. Writing down his experiences extensively brought him back to health. He has since occupied himself with painting and became internationally known for it. He died in the summer of 2015 at the age of 90.
