The Frisian artist Jelle Hoogstra (1924-2003) began his artistic education at the age of eighteen in 1942 at the academy "kunst-oefening" in Arnhem. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete his education due to the war situation, but immediately after the liberation he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and was able to complete his studies there. With great drive and passion, he continued to make gouaches, pastels and drawings of everything that inspired him in his studio until old age, usually originating from his own imagination. Hoogstra was very interested in various subjects, such as landscapes, cityscapes, the human figure, geishas, animals, still lifes and nature. Although he also painted frequently in France, the Dutch landscape was his great source of inspiration.
