Stierhout studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and painted flower still lifes and Amsterdam cityscapes in a light impressionistic style.

Stierhout was nominated for the Prix de Rome in 1938. After the war he remained true to his own loose style, in which his use of colour and his palette - after a trip through France - became increasingly lighter.

The Pollux was the training sailing ship of the Sailors' Institute (later the Lower Nautical School) for over 50 years and, like its predecessors, a popular eye-catcher in the Oosterdok.
