Beautiful medal by Jos Reniers, issued in 1983 by VPK (Association for Medal Art).

The whole is in neat condition. The first two photos are of the medal in question. The last two photos come from the VPK site, for a good impression of the medal.

Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) is perhaps best known for his spectacular escape in a book chest from Muiderslot; it is often forgotten that he ended up there as a result of disgraceful treatment by his intolerant compatriots. Of more lasting importance is the legal work of the humanist Grotius, his De jure belli et pacis and Mare librum which remain the best known. Reniers, a student of Steyn, has tackled his view of the scholar in a way that has also proven its effectiveness elsewhere. A deepened ground serves as a base in which the portrait appears in high relief, supported by a schematically indicated collar. The back of the head runs along with the tail, cheek and chin are set up in wide areas; mustache and pointed beard were accentuated with a few fine incisions. An almost unnoticed floor runs diagonally across the temple. The convex reverse shows the scholar's name in a convergence of surfaces, in thin raised letters, and in a beautiful transition from round to straight. (source website VPK)
