Maartje Wijngaarden is a late bloomer in art. It was not until she was 35 that she developed into a professional visual artist. Initially she painted fairly traditional landscapes and still lifes in a Neo-Impressionist style. Gradually she developed her own handwriting with the main theme being her vision of nature and how she cares about people and animals. Animals are almost always depicted in her recent works. Sometimes she also paints scenes about the relationship between humans and animals. Her forms are always abstract and often have heavy contours.
