Marinus Fuit, living in Haarlem, developed as a self-taught draftsman-painter. Training as a lithographer at the Amsterdam Graphic School laid the technical foundation for his graphics. In 1967 he had his first solo exhibition in Amsterdam, after which many solo and group exhibitions followed throughout the Netherlands.
After initially incorporating cubist and also surrealist influences, in the mid-1960s Fuit could no longer fit his visual language into the previous generations and his work developed into a very individual expression of the absurd in the new figuration.
Fuit paints suggestive scenes that are constructed from various elements derived from reality. They are large compositions with bright, predominantly primary colours. The shapes are recognizable from everyday life. You will find apartment buildings, fences, a sea, blue sky, empty balconies, a post and they are delicately executed in clear compositions that are shown as a mathematical elaboration with strict shapes and colors. The human figures, who initially played a role, have now disappeared from his work. The emphasis has gradually shifted to objects in themselves, which are depicted in such a way that they seem to have a life of their own, as if cut off from time. These objects are often situated in the coastal strip against steel blue skies. The work is the result of existential experiences with metaphysical scope.
His highly disciplined technique is mainly based on precise drawing. He uses watercolor paint, gouache paint, India ink and sometimes piezography.
Fuit's work is difficult to categorize. Comparisons are made in the direction of (magical) realist and surrealist, with the work of Giorgio de Chirico being mentioned quite often. Marinus Fuit's work occupies its own position in Dutch visual art.
