Biography
The painter Marinus (MJ) Drulman mainly worked under the pseudonym Marius de Jongere. In fact, only during the war years, when working under a pseudonym was prohibited, did he work under his own name. He was the stepson of the painter and etcher Marius Janssen (see elsewhere on this site). Born in Amsterdam, he was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam; he mainly lived and worked in Rotterdam. He painted and watercolored in a naturalistic-impressionistic style and became best known for his harbor views, but also liked to paint (polder) landscapes. He was very productive and delivered several paintings a day in his heyday. This also received critical reviews from the art critics, but the public, national and international, highly appreciated his work. He gained fame mainly because of his lifelike representation of the water. The Greek shipping magnate Onassis ordered many ship portraits from him and President Lyndon B. Johnson visited his studio in Hillegersberg to buy a number of canvases. (various sources)
In 2019 a beautifully arranged biography about him was published by his children Carola Prins and Maarten Drulman, in close collaboration with the art dealer Ron van Driel (978946319 2019)
