Martin Engelman was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and typographer.
He studied at the Amsterdam Graphic School, the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts (graphic techniques) in Maastricht and at the art academy of Sankt Gallen (typography and composition) in Switzerland.
Martin Engelman has worked in England, France, Italy, the United States and Switzerland, among other places.
In the Netherlands, Engelman worked with Klaas Gubbels, among others.
His work has developed from surrealistic to abstract expressionistic. From 1964 onwards he worked exclusively autonomously.
He has taught at various academies in Germany and the United States
His graphic work was shown at Documenta III in Kassel, among other places. Engelman's work can be found in many museum, corporate and private collections. In the Netherlands, the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, among others, own his work.
