In the years 1936 - 1938 Escher's style changes from lifelike etchings to the more mathematical metamorphoses where he gains much appreciation that give him his later fame. Sky and Water, made in December 1938 is a good example of this transition that was influenced by his visits to the Alhambra.

"Water and Air II" is a woodcut that beautifully captures the artist's fascination with symmetry, repetition and the transitions between forms. It is one of his earlier works in which he focuses on natural elements and their transformation. It shows how Escher was often concerned with the boundaries between different realities, and how he was able to magically blur them through his eye for mathematical precision and visual illusion.

The symmetry, rhythm and geometry in this work emphasise his admiration for mathematical structures and patterns, which makes Escher's style so unique. The combination of nature and geometry in a flowing pattern is also a reflection of his interest in connecting reality with abstract concepts.

Literature: Illustrated on page 275 (no. 308) in Life and work of MC Escher (Bool/Kist/Locher/Wierda).

Origin: Purchased at TEFAF and has been in the family ever since (from an inheritance, year of purchase unknown).

About the artist:
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is known for his hypnotic and often seemingly impossible graphic works. This woodcut, called 'Sky and Water II', shows fish and birds merging inimitably into each other. The woodcut is signed in pencil in the lower left corner.

The work Air and Water dates from the early years when Escher began his 'metamorphoses' in which shapes merge and transform into other shapes, as here with fish and birds.
