Nikolaas Mathijs Eekman was a figurative painter, watercolourist, woodcarver, etcher and lithographer. Follows drawing lessons in Brussels from the age of twelve. Studies architecture, sculpture and painting at the Academy of Brussels. Is a member of Arti et Amicitiae, Sint-Lucas and De Onafhankelijken in the Netherlands and of La Nationale des Beaux-Arts and Le Trait in France. Leads his own Academy in Paris for six years. Illustrates with etchings including Uylenspiegel by C. De Coster. Lives and works in Brussels until 1914; stays in the Netherlands for a few years and settles permanently in Paris around 1920. Works in numerous museums, including Brussels, Amsterdam, Arnhem, The Hague, Dordrecht, Otterlo, Paris, Dresden, Munich, Moscow, Prague and Chicago.
