Pietro Armati studied at the Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti in Bergamo from 1914 to 1921. He received several medals there and in 1919/1920 won a scholarship to continue his studies in Rome.

Later he moved to Milan where he had his own studio from 1922 to 1929. In the late 1920s, Armati met the Amsterdam photographer, painter and entrepreneur Gerrit Hendrik Heinen in Como. The two entered into an agreement and in 1930 Armati travelled to Aalten. There he received various assignments. Among other things, he painted portraits of the textile manufacturer Jos Driessen and his wife Josefa Driessen-Beckmann.
After a conflict with Heinen, the painter moved to Winterswijk that same year. There he painted portraits of wealthy citizens and nobility from the area and a number of landscapes in and around Winterswijk. Later he lived in Enschede. In 1933 Armati exhibited in Arnhem, where he also exhibited a portrait of the Italian dictator Mussolini. Between 1937 and 1944 the painter traveled and lived in various places, including Amsterdam, Winterswijk, Arnhem and Denekamp.
In 1942 and 1944 he took part in exhibitions at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which were organised by the Kultuurkamer.
In 1945 he was forced to return to Italy, where he returned to Endine. There he started a cinema in 1950, but this venture failed. In the fifties Armati traveled again to the Netherlands, where he again traveled and painted.
This portrait was completely restored and cleaned in 1996 and is in an impeccable frame.
A painting by this painter is currently offered on Etsy for 2200 euros.
