Ronald Terpstra, born in 1948 in Amsterdam, came into contact with the Amsterdam painter Jan Korthals at the age of fifteen, who stimulated him greatly. After his high school graduation, he received his education at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was taught by painter Arie Kater, among others.
During his time at the academy he was awarded the Uriot Prize for painting and the Art Achievement Prize of the Municipality of Amsterdam.
