Ronald Terpstra, born in 1948 in Amsterdam, came into contact with the Amsterdam painter Jan Korthals at the age of fifteen, who stimulated him greatly. After his high school graduation, he received his education at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was taught by painter Arie Kater, among others.
During his time at the academy he was awarded the Uriot Prize for painting and the Art Achievement Prize of the Municipality of Amsterdam. He was also accepted as a member of the artists' associations "Arti et Amicitiae", "de Onafhankelijken" and "Sint-Lucas", with which he exhibited annually in the Stedelijk Museum since 1970. He also received advice from the famous portrait painter Sierk Schröder.
Ronald Terpstra felt attracted to portrait painting from a young age and has carried out a series of portrait commissions, including many children's portraits. He also painted famous Dutch people such as
John Eylders, Salo Muller, Wim Ibo and the actresses Ank van der Moer, Kitty Jansen and Halina Reijn.
