  • Around his education at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten where he started in 1925, Theo Beerendonk's works were impressionistic and later exuberant in use of color. In the period after the war, Beerendonk focused mainly on etching. He made many etchings of his city, Amsterdam. His heart lay in etching.
Inspired by Pablo Picasso, among others, Beerendonk slowly but surely shifted from the figurative to the abstract in the course of the 1950s and 1960s. His mono prints under the title 'L'Oiseau de Feu (Firebird)' are on the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Later, Beerendonk continued to investigate all kinds of new abstract art movements and even made three-dimensional work. During this experimental, abstract period, Theo Beerendonk was given an honorable position as curator of the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam in 1967. Which once again demonstrates the versatility of the artist.
