Toni Stadler (1888 –1982) was a German sculptor and draftsman. He was the son of the landscape painter Anton von Stadler (the co-founder of the Munich Session), originally from Austria. He studied at the Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule Munich from 1906 to 1909 and worked in the studio of the sculptor August Gaul in Berlin from 1909 to 1911. After the First World War he continued his studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Munich with Hermann Hahn. In 1925 he married the artist Hedda von Kaulbach, second daughter of painter Friedrich August Sigmund von Kaulbach and violinist Frida Schytte. They moved to Paris together for two years, where Stadler mainly had contact with Aristide Maillol. In the years that followed, Stadler was strongly influenced by the work of Marino Marini and Henri Laurens. In 1942 he was appointed professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. From 1946 to 1958 he took up a professorship at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, where he also held the vice presidency from 1953. His students included Christa von Schnitzler, Michael Croissant, Hans Steinbrenner and Herbert Peters. Stadler was invited as a participant at Documenta 1 in 1955, II in 1959 and III in 1964 in Kassel. He received several prizes: 1947 Visual Arts Incentive Prize of the Bavarian capital Munich Villa-Romana-Preis (twice) for a stay in Florence 1964 Grand "Merit Kreuz" of the Federal Republic of Germany 1974 Cultural Prize of the City of Munich
