Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950) 'Tempelpoort Bali' (Gate in Sangsit on Bali) Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950) was a versatile artist: graphic artist, painter, architect, shipbuilder, writer, explorer, art collector and ethnographer. He still occupies a prominent place among artists around 1900.
Nieuwenkamp was headstrong, paid little attention to others and went his own way. He worked very hard. At the age of 24 he married Anna Wilbrink. WOJ was her second cousin. Together they had three daughters and a son: Marianne, Willem, Maria and Fernande (Ferry).
Travel and Wander Nieuwenkamp found inspiration for his work in travelling. Before 1897 he traveled in the Netherlands and Europe, then in the East Indian archipelago, often on expeditions lasting many years. He visited the island of Bali six times during his travels. In 1900 he built his beautiful living and studio ship De Zwerver, with which he sailed through the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with his family. In 1910 he settled in Edam, in 1920 he left for Italy where he lived until his death. His motto: vagando acquiro (wandering I acquire).
