In the rehabilitation center in Heerenveen he became fascinated with painting again, first as occupational therapy and increasingly also as a fulfillment of his daily work. After his recovery he improved the quality of his work considerably through drawing and a lot of painting outdoors.
The well-known Makkum pottery and Frisian clocks also had his interest for some time, but he felt this too much as decoration and could not express himself in his own will to create. Oil paint changed this and Willem Kroon had a strong future ahead of him as a painter. Unfortunately, Willem Kroon died prematurely in 2001 due to illness.
