Willem Snitker (Heemstede, 1938)

Sometimes you forget that Willem Snitker is a painter, because he also likes to leave that lonely and solo craft to make things with others or to bring others – poets, musicians and composers – together. His studio plus Bleeker Galerie in Heemstede is a treasure trove full of beauties that this has produced. The first project devised by Willem that I participated in, was a folder with poems and graphics by Jan Sierhuis, Harry Mulisch, Ger Lataster, Gerrit Achterberg and Nono Reinhold, among others. If there is anything typical of Snitker's vision of the visual arts, it is the eagerness with which he throws open the doors and windows of his studio to enter into collaboration with others, such as most recently with David Mitchell for the project 'DEJIMA' and a book object about Sicilia with Geerten Meijsing. Earlier, with the Milanese poet Franco Loi, the angels of Michel van der Plas, with Lucebert, Jan Elburg, Toer van Schaik, Jan Cremer and Bert Schierbeek. He recently discovered 35 unknown, magnificent drawings in the attic of Mari Andriessen's studio, and he and his wife gave a monumental Lataster on long-term loan to the Haarlem Philharmonic. It is reminiscent of the impressive undertakings for which the Italian Renaissance brought artists together, but also of the way in which artists collaborated on books, films and buildings in early European Modernism.
