Glass factory Iittala was opened in 1881 by Petrus Magnus Abrahamsson under the name Iittala Glasbruks Aktiebolag. Under Claës Norstedt, the first in-house designer was appointed towards the end of the nineteenth century: Alfred Gustafsson. As a result of the First World War, the company was sold to Karhula Oy in 1917. From 1935, products were first produced under the Karhula-Iittala name. Two years later, the factories were split again to allow for more specialist work: Karhula used automatic processes while Iittala made hand-blown glass. In 1988 the parent companies of Iittala merged into Iittala-Nuutajärvi Oy and in 1990 the company was sold to the Hackmann Group, which also owned Arabia and Rörstrand-Gustavsberg. Today Iittala is part of Fiskars Finland.
In the nineteenth century glassware was made at Iittala, which was then more often seen: painted crockery, glass that was blown, pressed and etched. That changed in the twentieth century. Instead of decorative designs, Iittala focused on functional objects with well-thought-out designs that were available to everyone. In the 1930s and 1940s, designers such as Aino Aalto, Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck played a major role in the development of the new visual language on which Iittala relied. Over the years, Iittala has specialized not only as a producer of glass, but also of ceramics and metal.
