Adam Colton (Manchester, 1957) attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London from 1975 to 1980 and settled in the Netherlands in the early 1980s. He took his own body as a starting point for his earliest drawings and sculptures. He measured it carefully and converted its spatial relationships into a pattern of dots and lines, from which meticulous drawings emerged. The pattern was also applied to the processing of large plaster blocks. By systematically chipping away parts, he allowed the form to emerge from the block and created sculptures, which he calls Carvings. The starting point was then no longer visible. Colton plays with transformation processes. He goes from three-dimensional to flat and back again, he enlarges, reduces and disrupts, until his starting object starts to 'swing', as he calls it. In 1987 Colton received the Charlotte van Pallandt Prize for sculpture and in 1991 the Sandberg Prize from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
