Chris Beekman joined the Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg in 1900. There he met Louis Soonius with whom he developed a close, but short, friendship. They worked closely together, also outside Rozenburg. This is evident from the fact that Beekman rented a studio on the Noorderbeekdwarsstraat in The Hague together with Aris Knikker and Louis Soonius. Together with other students they went outside on weekends to draw. An example of such a drawing is the work above. In 1909 Beekman resigned from Rozenburg and turned his back on his somewhat traditional friends to explore the path of abstraction. Influenced by socialism and De Stijl he took the path of modern art and started experimenting with the various -isms of his time. Similar drawings are included in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
