Dimensions: 70 X 50 cm Very good condition. Always kept in the art folder and therefore never framed! Last 2 photos for information.

The Belgian painter Jan Burssens was born in Mechelen in June 1925. He was largely self-taught. He studied for several months at Sint-Lucas in Ghent and a year at the academy in Ghent. After the Second World War, Jan Burssens was one of the first Flemish artists who, following the American Jackson Pollock, made so-called dripping abstractions. As the name dripping suggests, Burssens literally let the paint drip over the canvas. Jan Burssens is considered one of the leading Flemish existentialist material painters. In the 1950s, these artists were deeply impressed by the existentialism preached by the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, which is characterized by the emphasis on individuality, individual freedom, and subjectivity. Burssens was decorated by La Jeune Peinture Belge in 1951 and 1954. In 1952 he founded the artist group Art Abstrait. Jan Burssens died in January 2002 in the city of which he was an honorary citizen, Nevele.
