Petrus Antonius Carolus Augustinus (Peter) Vos (Utrecht, September 15, 1935 – Utrecht, November 6, 2010) was a Dutch draftsman, graphic artist and illustrator. He was best known for his illustrations for a large number of books, magazines and magazines. With a recognizable handwriting, he drew with a sharp eye and a sense of humor, especially animals (especially birds), people and combinations thereof (metamorphoses). Smoking with Annie MG Schmidt and Renate Rubinstein (1988) Peter Vos was born on September 15, 1935 in Utrecht. His father, Cornelis J. Vos (1891-1955), is the driving force behind DeCommunity, a magazine and publisher of young Catholics in Utrecht. CJ Vos has a wealth of artist friends, including Joseph Roth, Jan Campert, Hendrik Marsman and Gerrit Rietveld. He also works as a journalist for the Utrechtsche Courant. Peter's mother Netty Hofland (1894-1951) is a milliner at the Utrecht company Gerzon. In 1944 Peter and his one and a half year older brother Paul are taken to a farmer in Groningen and stay there until the liberation. Already at the age of four, Vos is intensively involved in drawing. His father recognizes his talent and encourages him to become a draftsman. Vos' first success was winning a drawing competition of the Utrecht bakery Lubro in 1945. He won the prize for the category up to twelve years and won a hundred guilders. At the St. Bonifatius College in Utrecht, Vos became acquainted with Greek and Roman mythology. Thanks to Ovid's poetry, his love for the metamorphoses of man in animal, especially of man in bird, arises. At the Bonifatius he also meets his later friends Theo Sontrop, Marcel van Dam and Jacques Boersma. Difficulties in his parental home, including the illnesses of both his father and mother, mean that Vos can often be found outside the home. He also sought refuge with other families, such as that of the composer Hendrik Andriessen, his art teacher JJA Jongenelen and his ancient language teacher Bart van Gool. In 1950 Vos' mother dies. Soon after, his father's health deteriorates. In the last years before his death, the sick and lonely Cornelis is cared for by his sons. He dies in 1955. In 1953, partly on the advice of art teacher Jongenelen, Vos started a study at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Professor FWS Thienen introduces him to the theater of the commedia dell'arte. Gé Röling, Marte Röling's father, takes Vos and his fellow students to Artis to draw animals. Vos's first published illustrations appeared in his first year at the academy, accompanying poems by Daan Zonderland in the collection De kok van Mariënbad. Around 1956, thanks to his friend Theo Sontrop, Vos ends up working for the student magazine Propria Cures. He meets Hugo Brandt Corstius, Renate Rubinstein and Rinus Ferdinandusse, among others. The latter asks him in 1958 to make illustrations for Vrij Nederland. He will continue to draw the lions in the Aside section until 2006. He has been publishing his free work in the literary magazine Hollands Maandblad since the early 1960s. He also illustrates more and more novels, poetry collections and non-fiction, eventually more than a hundred books. His first own publication is Creation Story (drawn in 1959 and published in 1966). In 1959 Vos' first exhibition is in Utrecht, five years later his first exhibition is in Amsterdam. He will continue to exhibit regularly until his death, especially together with other artists from the Utrecht graphic company De Luis, of which he has been a member since 1960. In 1962 Vos spends three months in Sweden, mainly Stockholm. Among other things, he makes sketches for his later heron book. In 1961 Vos lives with poet Fritzi Harmsen van Beek in her house, Jagtlust, in Blaricum. With her he shares a love for both drawing and poetry. For Fritzi he draws Astrology for beginners and nitwits (unpublished) and De 100 Reigers, published in 1969. In 1963 Fritzi breaks off the relationship and Vos returns to Amsterdam. In 1965 Vos marries Anneke Bakkum and returns to live in Utrecht. He draws the Klein Pulcinellenboek for Anneke, which was published in 1970 for her. Son Sander Vos was born in 1967. That same year, Vos' brother Paul dies. In 1969, Vos is the subject of a film by Hans Keller for VPRO television. In 1970 he gained further fame with his Animal Quartet. In 1972 he received the Zilveren Griffel for the illustrations in De Pozzeboks. The Fairytales of the Low Countries, also with drawings by Vos, became a bestseller that same year. In 1974 Vos, overwhelmed by the amount of work, suffers a major breakdown and decides to accept no more assignments for illustration work. The following year he leaves Anneke and moves in with Renate Rubinstein. Five years followed with no publications - apart from his own "Who Did Kill Cock Robin?/Wie Schoot Roodbaardje Pik?" and the Lions for Aside. In the late 1970s, he devoted himself to making lithographs and started studying birds in a more systematic way. He twice visits Eilat, Israel, to draw birds. He often studies in the Artis zoo in Amsterdam, which he visits countless times with his son Sander. The result can be seen in A Study in Grey, published in 1980. From 1976 Vos has a relationship with actress Marina Schapers (1938-1981), the wife of Peter Schat. In 1982, Peter is again the main character in a film for AVRO television. His marriage, that same year, to Ninon Le Grand lasted only a few months. Meanwhile, the orders keep coming in. In 1980 and 1982 Vos designed children's stamps, in 1984 the summer stamps. In 1981 he was awarded the Jeanne Bieruma Oosting Prize for his drawings and watercolors. In 1984 he draws hundreds of birds during a visit to Spain, a year later he draws again in Eilat. On the occasion of Albert Heijn's centenary in 1986, Vos made four prints. The lithographs thereof are donated to all members of staff. In 1986 Vos meets Saïda Lokhorst, with whom he will remain until his death. Among the many works dedicated to her is the book What You Don't Often See, published in 1991, with a series of drawings that capture the main themes of his work. In 1991 Vos receives the Golden Brush for his illustrations for a book by Rudy Kousbroek. In 1995, around his 60th birthday, there is a major retrospective exhibition in museum De Beyerd in Breda. Radio, television and newspapers pay a lot of attention to the exhibition and to Peter Vos. In 2003 Vos devoted himself to his Metamorphoses, inspired by the poems from Ovid's work of the same name, which deal with the metamorphosis from man to bird. In 2009, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam purchased a 'representative group of works' from Vos. In 2010 there will be a retrospective exhibition of his work. together with that of colleague and friend Charles Donker, in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Shortly after the opening, on November 6, 2010, Vos dies of cancer. In 2011 he will posthumously receive the Maartenspenning 2010 (for services to the city of Utrecht). Vos left behind an extremely extensive oeuvre of line drawings, etchings, lithographs and washed drawings. He was a very well-read man, could quote by heart many poets and writers from world literature in their original language and the good listener can therefore find numerous literary references in his work. In 2013 there is the exhibition Metamorphoses in Fondation Custodia in Paris and in the Rembrandt House, Amsterdam. The book of the same name by Eddy de Jongh and Jan Piet Filedt Kok will also be published. In 2021/2022 Singer Laren will host the exhibition Peter Vos. Drawn bird books place.
