  • Jan van der Zee (1898-1988) was an artist born in Leeuwarden who lived most of his life in Groningen. He drew a lot as a child. Jan van der Zee moved from the Frisian to the Groningen capital and enrolled at the Minerva, the local Academy of Visual Arts. At that time, the Groningen art world was bubbling and buzzing, culminating in the founding of the groundbreaking art movement De Ploeg in 1918. In 1921, De Ploeg took off, thanks to co-founder Jan Wiegers, who was impressed by German expressionism after meeting Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

Jan van der Zee joined De Ploeg two years later, in 1923. He was an active member and remained so until the Second World War. Van der Zee is known as one of the most talented artists of De Ploeg. Van der Zee is a curious artist who continues to develop throughout his life. His oeuvre is therefore extensive and very diverse, both in style and medium: he not only makes paintings and drawings, but also lithographs, woodcuts, linocuts and watercolours. And he even designs furniture. And Jan van der Zee also makes monumental work, for example he designs a number of stained glass windows for the Martinikerk in Groningen.
